Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

For 25 years, Ivan Brandslund has been a laboratory director and chief physician at Vejle Hospital and at the same time held a lecturer in teaching and research at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU). He is the author of over 150 scientific articles on the development and application of methods for rational diagnostics and control of human disease treatment. In recent years, especially in blood thinning treatment, cancer and diabetes. Ivan Brandslund is a specialist in clinical biochemistry at OUH and holds a scientific career from SDU and as an international research fellow at Dept. Of Public Health, USA, from which he was taken to the Laboratory at Vejle Hospital in 1985. He was the main character behind the building of the Laboratory Center at Vejle Hospital, which houses five medical diagnostic specialties, with a large and growing scientific production. His future research efforts will focus on biochemical nanotechnology methods that will enable measurement of single cell protein, RNA and DNA for diagnostic and individual treatment management in cancer and diabetes based on the isolation of cancer cells in a blood sample and on blood indicator proteins, in collaboration with oncologists And diabetes doctors in the Region of Southern Denmark. Ivan Brandslund is a partner in the National Diabetes Type 2 project, DD2, with analysis / biobank functions, and groups in cancer research, among others. Dr. Swenberg’s long, successful research career focused on chemical carcinogenesis and toxicology, with an emphasis on studying the role of DNA damage and repair in carcinogenesis, developing highly sensitive assay methods for DNA and protein adduct research and improving the scientific basis of risk assessment. He makes extensive use of mass spectroscopy for biomarker studies. After a successful industrial and research institute career, he joined UNC-Chapel Hill as a professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. In addition to his Department of Nutrition appointment, he is also a professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and is the Director of Curriculum in Toxicology. He is affiliated with the Department of Nutrition as a trainer on the Department of Nutrition’s NIH Training Grant. His work on oxidant damage is of great interest to the Department and he contributes research supervision and instruction to Nutrition graduate students. He is a member of numerous prestigious toxicology and pathology societies and serves on several science and editorial advisory boards.

Chemical carcinogenesis and toxicology, Role of DNA damage and repair in carcinogenesis, Development of highly sensitive assay methods for DNA and protein adduct research

Roberto Menicagli has completed his Ph.D. at the age of 25 years from Milan University. Postdoctoral studies in biochemistry and molecular genetics, the faculty of biology at Milan University. In this university, he has been professor to Contract, and became responsible for the Project ENEA-CNR for Environmental Pollution and Biomarkers ,after thirty years ,in industrial biochemistry experience ,as Senior Research in ENIRESEARCH, the most important group of the research in Italy, now, for five years, he is the director of Roma Biomed Research Lab a Private Medical Service Organization. He has published, in this field, more than 20 papers, in many journals, some with Impact Factor, he is also the principal author of 4 international patents, in the field of the environment and biomarkers, and has been serving as an editorial board member of some magazines, concerning the medical sciences.

Medicinal Chemistry, industrial biochemistry, biochemistry and molecular genetics

Dr. Claudio Sorio is Associate Professor of General Pathology. He is the founder and serves as Director of the Departmental Laboratory of Translational Research In Cystic Fibrosis of the Department of Medicine of the University of Verona. Study of Biomarkers for Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis are the main field of interests, with a specific focus on the role of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Gamma (PTPRG) in health and disease, that he discoverd having a role as dendritic cell biomarker and as tumor suppressor gene in chronic myeloid leukemia. In the field of cystic fibrosis since 2009 he promoted the study of the role of leukocytes, especially monocytes, in the disease and as a tool to better understand its pathogenesis and be exploited as disease biomarker. He has been leading and actively participating to multiple research projects in leukemia and Cystic Fibrosis. He authored 74 original publications in international journals and is the single major contributor in the field of PTPRG characterization. He has been serving as an editorial board member of various reputed journals. He is member of many scientific societies and has participated in relevant national and international research projects.

Biomarkers of disease

Dr. Nickolas is an anatomic pathologist with interest in breast surgical pathology. In addition he is interested in evidence-based medicine in respect to efficiency of medical interventions and accuracy of diagnostic procedures.Currently he is a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC and Anatomical Pathologist at St.Paul’s Hospital. He is awarded with UICC Fellowship for junior investigators, 2007-2008, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Travelling Fellowship, 2007-2008, and Canadian Association of Pathologists, Junior Scientist Award, 2006. He has experience teaching a wide spectrum of topics in pathology in university settings for small and large classes, residency training, medical and non-medical students, graduate, postgraduate and undergraduate levels. He has published more than 50 research papers.

Diagnostic Surgical pathology of breast disease, evidence-based practice of pathology. I am interested in clinical research evidence synthesis through critical appraisal of medical literature; diagnostic theory based on Bayesian reasoning and nature and sources of bias in clinical research.

Assoc. Prof. Přemysl Mladěnka, Pharm.D., Ph.D. was graduated in 2003 at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Charles University, Czech Republic. He received his Ph.D. from Pharmacology and toxicology at the same institution in 2008. From 2014 he is the Associate Professor in Human and veterinary pharmacology. Currently he is also the ERASMUS+ coordinator of the Faculty of pharmacy, Charles University. Scientifically he is the head of the group of Cardiovascular and respiratory pharmacology and toxicology. At the moment, he is the author or co-author of 38 scientific papers, 36 of them in journal with IF (average IF 2.8). During his career he was awarded by several awards (e.g. in 2009 The price of the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports for remarkable results during doctoral study, 2011 The young scientist award of Danone institution for the best work in the field of nutrition, 2014 selected for the participation in the 64th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, 2014 poster award for extraordinary scientific achievements at annual meeting of The Society for Free Radical Research – Europe). Dr. Omyma A. Abd-Allah is a Professor of Organic Chemistry in Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Sohag University, Egypt since 2017.She awarded her M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry (1989) from Assiut University. She awarded her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (1995) from South Valley University. She has published more than 40 research papers in the areas of Organometallic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. She contributed in many international conferences, seminars and symposiums. Also, She has a history of several years of teaching for college students and various disciplines and trends in different universities.
